What is a Biome ?
A biome is a group of small organisms that form large natural ecosystem which is distinct in its climatic conditions with specific type of plant and animal life. Biomes are the largest ecological units of the world.
Major biomes on Earth
1. Tundra
- Arctic tundra : North America, Europe, Asia
- Alpine tundra: Himalayas
2.Temperate
- Taiga/Boreal forests: Himalayan coniferous forests
- Temperate deciduous
- Temperate grasslands
- Chapparal or mediterranean scrub forests- bush fires
Temperate grasslands include:
Prairies in USA, Pampas in South America, Steppes in Eurasia, Tussocks in Newzealand, Downs in Australia, Veldtsin South Africa
3.Tropical
- Tropical forests
- Tropical deciduous
- Tropical savannah
- Desert: Thar, Sahara, Gobi
