                MAJOR SOIL ORDERS AND THEIR CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES


There are 12 Major soil orders as recognised by the USDA they are briefly given below , a video depicting the photos  of these soil orders is also provided below  ::

1.	Inceptisols	Young embryonic soils  with few diagnostic features
2.	Entisols	Recently  formed alluvial soils
3.	Vertisols	Black swelling clays , deep cracks develop when dry
4.	Oxisols	Highly weathered soils , sesquioxide rich soils
5.	Alfisols	Relatively young soils , Forest soils
6.	Histosols	Organic soils  >20% Organic matter
7.	Aridosols	Desert soils of arid regions
8.	Spodosols	Accumulation of Sesquioxides
9.	Ultisols	Low nutrient status
10.	Mollisols	Soft grassland dark soils
11.	Andisols	Soils  formed in volcanic ash
12.	Gelisols	Soils with permafrost within 2m from surface
