Cropping intensity and rotational intensity

The tern cropping intensity refers to raising of a number of crops from the same field during one agriculture year.

Consider an example if a farmer owns a 4 hectare land and he cultivates 1 crop throughout the year his cropping intensity is 100%[Since total cropped area is 4 and Net sown area is also 4] , IF he cultivates two crops ie rice in khaif and cotton in rabi season then his cropping intensity will be 200% [since total cropped area is 8 and Net sown area is 4]

Formulae of cropping intensity is

Total Cropped Area divided by Net Sown Area multiplied by 100%

eg : If only one crop is cultivated in one year then the cropping intensity will be 100% , If two crops are cultivated in a year then the cropping intensity will be 200%

Cropping intensity of maize-potato-wheat is 300%

Formulae of rotational intensity is

Number of crops grown in rotation divided by Duration of the rotation
