Differences between karyotype and idiogram
Karyotype
- karyotype is the characterisation of the chromosomes of an individual species or of an organism
- Chromosome shape, number, centromere position, secondary constrictions are used for making karyotype
- It is used to identify any large scale changes in the chromosome like addition, deletion etc.
Idiogram

- It is a diagram that depicts the arrangement of chromosomes obtained by karyotyping
- Here the homologous chromosome pairs are arranged based on decreasing size of the chromosomes
- It is useful for identifying genes in chromosomes and also in detecting chromosomal abnormalities
