Populations and types

Population:

It is the unit of biotic community made up of almost permanent groups of interbreeding individuals of a species found in a space or particular geographic area at a particular time.

Local populations are termed as a Deme

Sister populations

The different local populations of a species live in semi-isolation and are called as sister populations

Metapopulations

Sister populations are connected by dispersing individuals forming a complex called as the metapopulation. In some cases it is also referred to as the new population that is formed from the original population.
