Seed Classes - Types


There are four recognised classes of seeds they are :


  1. Breeders seed
  2. Foundation seed
  3. Registered seed
  4. Certified seed


Breeder seed

The seed or the vegetatively propagated material is being directly controlled by the originating or sponsoring breeder or it may even be the institution that is the basic seed for recurring increase of the foundation seed.

Foundation seed 

The progeny of the breeder seed is the foundation seed. The seed stock handled to maintain specific identity and genetic purity, that might be designated or distributed and procured under careful supervision of an agricultural experimental station, This seed is the source of all other certified seed classed either directly or through the registered seed.

Registered seed

It is the progeny of the foundation seed so handled to maintain its genetic identity and approved and certified by an certifying agency. The quality must be satisfactory to produce certified seed.

Certified seed

It is the progeny of the foundation seed. It should have a minimum genetic purity of 99%. In some cases certified seed can be the progeny of another certified seed(only when two generations beyond Foundation seed) in case of highly self pollinated crop one generation may be permitted.

Nucleus seed -> The initial seed with the breeder, it will have 100
% percent genetic purity and its quality is maintained by the breeder himself

Color/Tag for various seed classes

Nucleus seed --> No specific tag

Breeder seed --> Golden yellow tag

Foundation seed --> White tag

Certified seed --> Azure blue tag

Truthfully labelled seed --> Opal green
